 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Deakin Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2003
  • Longridge Capelands Merlot 2002
  • Santa Alicia Merlot Reserve 2000

Three wines at $9.95 on general release at the LCBO.

Deakin Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2003 (Australia)
$9.95 (general release)
A very serviceable Sauvignon at a bargain price. Pale straw colour; grassy, green bean nose; very crisp and light-bodied with green melon and lemon flavours. ***˝
Food match: mussels; smoked trout

Longridge Capelands Merlot 2002 (South Africa)
$9.95 (general release)
Tasting blind, I would have pegged this as a Pinotage rather than a Merlot, but its price is really attractive. Bright ruby colour; cedar, currants and red berries on the nose; more concentrated on the palate than the nose – suggests sweet blackcurrant, tar, smoke and iodine notes; medium- to full-bodied. Good value. ***˝
Food match: BBQ-ed ribs; provolone cheese

Santa Alicia Merlot Reserve 2000 (Chile)
$9.95 (general release)
More recognizable as Merlot, though a little heavy on the oak. Dense ruby-purple colour; sweetish, crushed blueberries and smoky oak on the nose; medium-bodied cocoa and berry flavours with a tannic lift on the finish. ***˝
Food match: lamb burgers; pork in coriander
