Redwood Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2002 (California)

A budget line from Gallo. Pale straw colour with an interestingly complex nose of anise. Fennel, cut grass and grapefruit zest; on the sweet side of dry with a golden plum and passionfruit flavour; medium-bodied with acidity that kicks in in the mid-palate. Long, dry finish. ***˝
Food match: grilled trout; Caesar salad

Mezzomondo Negromaro Salento 2002 (Puglia, Italy)
$7.95 (general release)
A wine in New World style at a bargain price. Dense purple-ruby colour; a rich flavour of plum, vanilla oak and chocolate with a floral note, chunky mouth feel; well made with a soft tannic finish. Great value. ***˝
Food match: pasta with spicy tomato sauce; hamburgers

Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2001 (South Eastern Australia)
$7.95 half bottle (general release)
Dense purple colour; warm, oaky, blackberry and spice nose; full-bodied, sweet blackberry fruit, well made with nicely integrated oak. Good to see this wine in 375 mL format. ****
Food match: duck breast; beef casserole
