680 NEWS wine reviews – May 26–28, 2017

Flat Rock Cellars Chardonnay 2015
On a clear day you can see the CN Tower from Flat Rock Cellars vineyard on the Niagara Escarpment. Or you could pop into a Vintages outlet and pick up a bottle of Flat Rock Chardonnay 2015. The wine is pale lemon-straw in colour with a spicy, toasty apple and citrus nose; medium-bodied, dry, oak-driven, it has orange and apple flavours with a toasty finish. It costs $18.95 a bottle and matches well with roast chicken or salmon dishes. That's Flat Rock Cellars Chardonnay 2015 from Ontario at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. (Vintages #286278, $18.95) (89)

Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz 2014
Penley Estate in Coonawarra, South Australia, is owned by two sisters, An and Bec Penley. Coonawara is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon but it also produces tasty Shiraz. Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz 2014, currently at Vintages, is dense purple in colour with a spicy, smoky nose of blackberries with a cedary note. Full-bodied, dry and richly extracted, it exhibits flavours of blackberry, pepper and licorice carried on lively acidity. It costs $18.95 and is perfect for red meat barbeques. That's Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz 2014 at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($18.95, Vintages #409078) (89)
