680 NEWS wine reviews – June 2–4, 2017

Tournon Mathilda Chapoutier Shiraz 2013
A couple of weeks ago I recommended a white wine from the Victoria region of Australia made by Michel Chapoutier from the Rhône. Well, its sister red is now at Vintages – Tournon Mathilda Shiraz 2013. More restrained and elegant than Barossa Shiraz, this wine is deep purple in colour with a spicy, herbal, blackberry bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, it's dry and fruity, firmly structured with sage-tinged notes of red and blackberries on the palate. It costs $17.95 at Vintages outlets. Ideal for red meat dishes. That's Tournon Mathilda Chapoutier Shiraz 2013. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($17.95, Vintages #336966)

Powers Columbia Valley Viognier 2015
Viognier make a nice change from Chardonnay, especially if you like your white wines with a touch of fragrance. Powers Columbia Valley Viognier 2015 from Oregon, currently at Vintages outlets, is light straw in colour with a minerally, honeysuckle and white peach nose. Medium-bodied and dry flavours of peach and apple fill the mouth, following though to a fresh, citrus finish. It costs $18.95 a bottle. Try it with sushi or spring rolls. That's Powers Columbia Valley Viognier 2015 from Oregon at Vintages. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($18.95, Vintages #486993)
