 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Delicato Family Vineyards Shiraz 2002
  • Cline Cellars Zinfandel 2001
  • R.H. Phillips Chardonnay 2002 Dunnigan Hills

On Tuesday I spent a very pleasant afternoon at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel amid 400 California wines from 100 producers. I concentrated on those wines that are available in Ontario on the LCBO's general list and those that are Vintages Essential products. So this week's wines should all be readily available.

Delicato Family Vineyards Shiraz 2002
$11.95 (general list)
Deeply coloured with an enticing nose of cinnamon and cloves mingled with vanilla and blackberry; medium-bodied, spicy with a commercial sweetness and soft mouthfeel but enough structure to give it swagger. ***½
Food match: BBQ ribs; pork chops

Cline Cellars Zinfandel 2001
$15.10 (general list)
Cline is a respected producer of big reds in Rhône varieties and Zins. This one is medium ruby colour with a mature nose of leather, tobacco and red berries; the fruit is succulent and well structured with a lasting flavour. ****
Food match: pot roast; game birds

R.H. Phillips Chardonnay 2002 Dunnigan Hills
$11.95 (general list)
You won't find a better New World Chardonnay at this price. Straw coloured with a spicy pineapple nose and the faintest suggestion of oak; full-bodied, sweetish with a note of mint on the finish. ***½
Food match: garlic chicken; veal marsala
