 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Château St. Georges 2000
  • Doudet Naudin Corton Maréchaudes 2000
  • Laurent Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut

My horoscope says I should spend money this week, so why not join me in these top-flight, five-star selections.

Château St. Georges 2000 (St. Emilion, Bordeaux)
$41.95 (Vintages stores – call 416-365-5900 to find which outlets have it)
Winemaker Petrus Debois says this is the best wine he's made since 1982. No question. Dense ruby colour; a bouquet of cedar, vanilla, coffee bean and spicy blackcurrant; richly extracted and concentrated blueberry-blackcurrant flavour with a floral grace note; full-bodied, velvety mouth feel with a chocolaty finish. Drinking well now but can hold for ten years. *****
Food match: rack of lamb; beef Wellington

Doudet Naudin Corton Maréchaudes 2000 (Burgundy)
$64.00 (Vintages stores – call 416-365-5900)
This Côte de Beaune comes on more like a Côte de Nuits in its depth of colour and flavour intensity. Deeply coloured ruby with a lovely nose of raspberries and rust elevated by smoky, toasty notes; full-bodied and concentrated with mineral, spicy raspberry flavour, balancing acidity and a cinnamon finish. *****
Food match: duck breast; pheasant

Laurent Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut (Champagne)
$66.95 (Vintages stores – call 416-365-5900)
A blend of 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay, made by skin contact to produce the colour. Tawny-orange colour with a nose of wild strawberries; delicate, soft mouth-feel. Beautifully balanced and elegant. *****
Food match: aperitif wine, beef carpaccio
