 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Stoney Ridge Shiraz 2003
  • Lailey Vineyard Vidal 2003
  • Lailey Vineyard Riesling Dry Late Harvested 2002

Three Ontario wines this week. All these wines are only available through the winery or can be ordered through www.winerytohome.com.

Stoney Ridge Shiraz 2003 (Ontario, blended with off-shore wine)
$14.95 (at the winery, 905-562-1324, Store@StoneyRidge.com)
Dense purple colour; smoky cedar and blackberry nose; full-bodied, sweet blackberry fruit, richly extracted, soft tannins on the finish. Good value. ****
Food match: BBQ-ed steak, gourmet burgers

Lailey Vineyard Vidal 2003 (Niagara Peninsula)
$12.00 (at the winery, 905-468-0503, tonya@laileyvineyard.com)
This is one of the best expressions of this hybrid grape I have tasted. Medium straw colour; vanilla with pineapple notes on the nose; dry. Medium-bodied with ripe, rich peach and pear flavours; fresh and zingy with a Pinot Gris-like character. Good value. ****
Food match: chicken salad, ham

Lailey Vineyard Riesling Dry Late Harvested 2002 (Niagara Peninsula)
$25.00 (at the winery, 905-468-0503, tonya@laileyvineyard.com)
Pricey for a Riesling but has the substance to warrant the price. Medium straw colour; spicy grapefruit bouquet; dry, full-bodied with a well-extracted spicy grapefruit and rhubarb flavour; good length with a long dry finish. ****
Food match: grilled scallops; crab salad.
