680 NEWS wine reviews – June 23–25, 2017

Trenel Beaujolais Villages 2015
Beaujolais is the perfect summer red because you can serve lightly chilled or at room temperature – as long as your room isn't at sauna levels. Currently at Vintages is a Beaujolais-Villages – one step up in quality from a simple Beaujolais. It's Trenel Beaujolais-Villages 2015. Dense purple in colour it offers a spicy, black cherry nose with a touch of oak. It's medium-bodied, dry and well-extracted with flavours of ripe cherry and plum. Fruity and firm, it finishes with grainy tannins. It costs $16.95 a bottle. Perfect for a summer picnic. That's Trenel Beaujolais Villages 2015 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($16.95, Vintages #487140) (88.5)

Gérard Bertrand Grés de Montpellier Syrah Grenache 2014
Whenever I'm looking for a bold red wine for the BBQ I look to the Languedoc. Just listed is a wine that checks all the boxes, if you'll pardon the cliché – it's Gérard Bertrand Grés de Montpellier Syrah Grenache 2014. Deep ruby in colour, it shows a floral, cedary nose of blackberry and raspberry. Medium-bodied, it's dry, well-balanced with savoury-herbal flavours of black fruits freshened by zesty acidity. It costs $18.95 at Vintages outlets and cries out for barbecued meats. That's Gérard Bertrand Grés de Montpellier Syrah Grenache 2014 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($18.95, Vintages #493635)
