680 NEWS wine reviews – July 28–30, 2017

Loukatos Brothers Mavrodaphne of Patras 2015
If you enjoy sweet wines, one of the real bargains currently at Vintages is Loukatos Brothers Mavrodaphne of Patras. Deep ruby-purple in colour with a mature rim, this dessert wine from Greece has a cedary, plum nose. It's full-bodied and sweet with the flavour of plum jam with spicy oak notes. It sells for $8.95 a half bottle. Chill it well and serve with plum tart or just enjoy it by itself instead of dessert. That's Loukatos Brothers Mavrodaphne of Patras 2015, newly released at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($8.95, Vintages #292797) (90)

Dandelion Vineyards Lioness of McLaren Vale Shiraz 2015
Dandelion Vineyards Lioness of McLaren Vale Shiraz 2015 from Australia is a real mouthful in both sense of the word. Weighing in at 14.5% alcohol, this muscular Shiraz is dense purple in colour with a spicy, herbal blackberry nose backed by vanilla oak. Full-bodied and fruity, it's firmly structured with a lively spine of acidity. It costs $21.95 at Vintages outlets. A ribs and burger wine, for sure. That's Dandelion Vineyards Lioness of McLaren Vale Shiraz 2015 from Australia. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($21.95, Vintages #357475) (89)
