680 NEWS wine reviews – August 25–27, 2017

Wild Ass Red 2015
Stratus winery in Niagara has a second label called Wild Ass. The red that winemaker J.L. Groulx makes under this brand is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Sangiovese. Deep purple in colour, the nose is spicy-cedary plum with a grace note of violets. Medium-bodied and dry, it's richly extracted with a black cherry flavour carried on lively acidity. It costs $19.95 at Vintages outlets. Match it with marinated beef ribs. That's Wild Ass Red 2015 from Niagara-on-the-Lake. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #86363) (89)

Fattoria di Piazza Piazzano Chianti 2015
Fattoria di Piazza Piazzano Chianti 2015 is the kind of wine you buy by the case. At $14.95 this Tuscan wine punches well above its weight in the flavour department. Deep ruby in colour, it has a plummy, earthy nose; medium-bodied and dry, sour cherry and plum flavours fill the mouth, given structure by ripe tannins and a lively spine of acidity. You'll find it at Vintages outlets. Serve it with tomato-based pasta dishes. That's Fattoria di Piazza Piazzano Chianti 2015 from Italy at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, Vintages #393199) (89)
