Coopers Creek Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush 2002 (New Zealand)
$12.95 (general list)
The name incorporates wine tasters' descriptors of this variety! Sauvignon Blanc can smell like the cat's tray but this one mercifully doesn't. It does have those green, vegetal notes, though – green bean and nettle with a hint of grapefruit rind and cut grass; almost water white, very dry and crisp with an engaging passionfruit sweetness on the middle palate with a dry almost tart finish. Good value. ****
Food match: grilled sardines; goat's cheese

Redbank The Long Paddock Sauvignon Blanc 2003 (Victoria, Australia)
$12.95 (general list)
This Aussie Sauvignon is richer in fruit; the colour is very pale straw and the palate opens up to fresh gooseberry and passion fruit flavours with zippy acidity. Medium-bodied with a smoky note. ***˝
Food match: smoked trout, Camembert

Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Shiraz 2001 (Coonawarra, Australia)
$15.05 (general list)
A big Shiraz at an affordable price. Purple-ruby colour; plum and red berries on the nose mixed with vanilla oak and a medicinal note; sweet blackberry and blackcurrant flavours with smoky, iodine and an energetic acidic finish. Good value ***˝
Food match: BBQ ribs, flank steak
