Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz 2002 (South Australia)
$19.95 (Vintages Essential product - UPC 01235 071988)
You won't find a better Shiraz than this at the price. The latest vintage has a dense purple colour; smoky, tarry, blackberry bouquet with an iodine note; full-bodied, fleshy blackberry fruit, well balanced, firm finish with a black licorice note. ****˝
Food match: venison, pepper steak

Henry of Pelham Meritage Cabernet-Merlot 2002 (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
$14.95 (General list)
Dense ruby colour; cedar, redcurrant and blackcurrant aromas with an oaky note; medium-bodied, well balanced and remarkably elegant for the price. Cherry flavour in mid-palate, firm finish. Good value ****
Food match: lamb chops, veal escalope

Flat Rock Cellars Nadja's Vineyard Riesling 2003 (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
$19.95 (only available at the winery. Call 905-562-8994 or email info@flatrockcellars.com)
This is a new Ontario winery with a young Australian winemaker, Darryl Brooker. For his first harvest he had to deal with the difficult 2003 harvest. This Riesling from the estate vineyard's first commercial crop is very encouraging. Very pale straw colour; already showing petrol on the nose with a citrus, oyster shell note; light-bodied, lovely dry tangerine and lemon mid-palate flavours; tart, lingering finish. Very Mosel in style. ****
Food match: oysters, smoked salmon
