 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Brokenwood Chardonnay 2003
  • Cono Sur Merlot 2003
  • Marques de Riscal Reserva 1999

Brokenwood Chardonnay 2003 (Hunter Valley, Australia)
$21.65 (Vintages # 960492)
A blend of grapes from New South Wales and South Australia. Straw coloured with ripe peachy-citrus bouquet; medium-bodied, intense fruit flavours, great balance and length. (I tried the 2000 vintage of this wine a few days ago. It had developed rich buttery, caramel toffee and apple flavours but maintained its fresh acidity, so the 2003 should cellar well.) Good value ****
Food match: grilled scallops, roast chicken

Cono Sur Merlot 2003 (Chile)
$9.05 (General list # 457176)
You won't find a better Merlot at the price. Dense purple in colour; sweet blueberry fruit on the nose; medium-bodied, easy drinking, fruit-driven with a lively acidic spine and a touch of oak on the finish. Great value. ****
Food match: BBQ burgers, mild Italian sausages

Marques de Riscal Reserva 1999 (Rioja, Spain)
$23.00 (General list # 32656)
A mature Tempranillo blend. Ruby colour; a nose of sandalwood and strawberries; medium-bodied, elegant, mature and velvety on the palate with a flavour of spicy strawberries with an oaky note; soft tannins on the finish. ****
Food match: duck breast, pork tenderloin
