Sauvignon Blanc Comparative Tasting @ The Tasting Rooms

6:30 pm, Wednesday, March 2

Sauvignon Blanc has distinct and recognizable characteristics. Aroma and flavor descriptors include flinty, spicy, floral, tropical and grassy. Quite often Semillon is blended in to add viscosity and weight and to balance out the forward aromas and crisp acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc.

The wine should be clean and refreshing on the palate, with lively acidity. Fruit qualities should be somewhere on the spectrum from citrus and melon to pineapple and passion fruit, depending on the growing area.

In South Africa, vineyards that are close to the sea benefit from cool Atlantic breezes. Newer viticultural areas such as Bot River, Elgin and Walker Bay have opened up in this cool southerly district. The area near the seaside town of Hermanus is the source of some of South Africa’s finest Sauvignon Blanc. The soils – predominantly weathered shales – and terroir are ideal for cool climate loving varieties.

Sauvignon Blanc is grown in many wine regions of France and in other countries as well. In the Loire Valley it is used as a varietal for the famous Pouilly-Fume and Sancerre.

When New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc burst onto the wine world back into the 1980s, it marked something of a watershed. Bold, bright, racy, it screamed out its identity, delivering full-on fruit expression. At its best Malborough remains the New World's front runner, but no longer can the Kiwis lay exclusive claim to greatness with this grape, with South Africa, Chile and Canada emerging as serious players.

Its plantings throughout Ontario are expanding and its character is similar to that of the Loire Valley.

Now, you can compare eight Sauvignon Blanc cool-climate wines from South Africa, France, Canada and New Zealand. Attend a tasting hosted by Robert Ketchin on Wednesday, March 2nd, at The Tasting Rooms.

We will be joined by members of the Ontario Wine Society.
