 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

Valentine's Day selection – spoil yourself (and your partner):

  • Piper-Heidsieck Rosé Sauvage Brut
  • Palatine Hills Gewürztraminer Icewine 2002
  • Jose Maria da Fonseca Alambre Moscatel 2000

Piper-Heidsieck Rosé Sauvage Brut (Champagne)
$59.95 (Vintages outlets)
Of course you have to have champagne on Valentine's Day. Pink is very romantic, but nothing pussy-footing here. This rosé is very dry and full flavoured with wild strawberry aromas and citrus and blood-orange and cinnamon flavours. *****
Food match: who needs food? But will match oysters, caviar and other aphrodisiacs

Palatine Hills Gewürztraminer Icewine 2002 (Ontario)
$29.95 (Vintages outlets)
In 200 mL format, just right for two lovers (or three if you insist). Old gold colour; rich nose of honey, spice and peach; unctuous and full-bodied, sweet but well balanced with citrus acidity. ****½
Food match: fruit-based desserts; foie gras

Jose Maria da Fonseca Alambre Moscatel 2000 (Portugal)
$13.95 (Vintages outlets)
Romance on a budget from Setubal, near Lisbon. Orange-amber colour; spicy orange and toasty nose; rich, full-bodied, raisiny with a nutty finish. Great length. ****½
Food match: chocolate-based desserts; fresh berries
