 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Thomas & Vaughan Marechal Foch 2002
  • Strewn Cabernets 2003
  • Angels Gate Vidal Blanc 2003

Three great value Ontario wines this week.

Thomas & Vaughan Marechal Foch 2002 (Niagara Peninsula)
$14.95 (Vintages stores – product code # 585968)
Dense purple colour; leather and plum on the nose; medium-full-bodied, well extracted fruit, spicy, smoky plum flavour with a lively spine of acidity. ****
Food match: garlic ribs; aged cheddar

Strewn Cabernets 2003 (Niagara Peninsula)
$14.95 (General release LCBO # 612820)
This is first rate for the price. Medium ruby colour with a nose of cedar, currants and vanilla; light to medium-bodied with a dry, spicy redcurrant flavour; very well balanced and elegant. ****
Food match: leg of lamb; grilled quail

Angels Gate Vidal Blanc 2003 (Niagara Peninsula)
$11.95 (from the winery or order www.winerytohome.com)
The forgotten face of Vidal as an off-dry wine rather than late Harvest or Icewine. Medium straw colour; sweet melon nose with a spicy note; richly extracted, sweet melon and citrus fruit; spicy; lively acidity gives it good length. Great value. ****
Food match: pineapple chicken; glazed ham
