Top Picks from Vintages' June 2002 release
Ca' del Solo Malvasia Bianca 2001 (Monterey, California)
One of Bonny Doon's amusing little wines, but this one has real character.
Pale straw in colour with a spicy, floral nose; sweetish floral (carnation)
flavour, very clean and well made with good length. A perfect summer sipper.
Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 (Napa Valley)
Yes, it's expensive – but worth it. A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon
and 6% Cabernet Franc. Dense purple-black colour with an intriguing nose
of blackcurrant and lychee; rich and velvety on the palate yet elegant
and well balanced.
June 15th release:
Thomas Hardy Cabernet Sauvignon 1996 (South Australia)
An icon wine from Oz. Dense purple colour with a vanilla, minty, oaky
nose. A little closed at the moment with the fruit not showing through,
but the richly extracted blackcurrant flavour augurs well for the future.
Hold for at least two years.
Landmark Vineyards Chardonnay "Overlook" 2000 (California)
The fruit comes from Sonoma and Monterey. Straw colour; Burgundian nose
of vanilla, toast, apple and a hint of barnyard. Full-bodied pear flavour
with well integrated oak; well balanced with great length.
