Ginestet Marquis de Chasse Merlot 2002 (Bordeaux)
$13.70 (General list)
A useful, well-priced claret for everyday drinking (with food). Ruby colour; cedar, black cherry and vanilla nose; medium-bodied, firm structure, dry and savoury with peppery tannins. Give it an hour in the decanter. ***˝
Food match: lamb chops; steak sandwich

Lungarotti Torre di Giano 2003 (Umbria, Italy)
$9.95 (Vintages Essential #49205)
This Trebbiano and Grechetto blend used to be on the general list and deserves to be back there again – certainly for the very ripe 2003 vintage. Straw coloured with a warm, peachy nose, it's quite full-bodied and round in the mouth with a ripe peach flavour (reminded me of Anselmi's San Vincenzo, an erstwhile Soave). Lots of flavour and good balancing acidity. A steal as a house white for $9.95. ****
Food match: chicken salad; grilled calamari

Lungarotti Rubesco 2001 (Umbria, Italy)
$11.70 (General list)
A blend of Sangiovese and Canaiolo. Chianti in style but better value than a lot of them. Good depth of colour; spicy cherry nose; medium-bodied with a dry cherry and earth flavour; good acidity, firm structure. ***˝
Food match: pasta with tomato sauce; grilled quail
