More Wines of the Week

  • Franz Reh Gewürztraminer 2004
  • Middelvlei Shiraz 2000
  • Emilio Lustau Solera Reserva "Rare" Amontillado "Escuadrilla"

Franz Reh Gewürztraminer 2004 (Pfalz, Germany)
$11.45 (General release, LCBO 622027)
A simple Gewürz but good varietal character for the price. Pale straw colour with a hint of lime; aromatic, spicy, orange blossom; light-bodied, fry, floral-spicy flavour. ***½
Food match: Thai dishes; smoked salmon

Middelvlei Shiraz 2000 (Stellenbosch, South Africa)
$16.95 (Vintages stores, #652602)
Australia isn't the only country that makes great Shiraz. Dense tawny ruby in colour with that characteristic blackberry and iodine nose; medium-bodied, the fruit is sweet with a note of leather, a wine that lingers on the palate. ****
Food match: beef stew; old cheddar

Emilio Lustau Solera Reserva "Rare" Amontillado "Escuadrilla" (Jerez, Spain)
$15.95 for 375 mL (Vintages stores, #660324)
This is one of my favourite sherries. Deep bronze colour; nuts and raisins on the nose; medium-bodied, dry, elegant, great structure and balance with a long cashew nut finish. *****
Food match: smoked ham; nuts
