 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Jeanjean Syrah Primeur 2005
  • MezzaCorona Novio Vino Novello 2005
  • Negrar Novello del Veneto 2005

Today (November 17) is the official launch date for Beaujolais Nouveau – and all the other new wines. There are 8 nouveau wines released, one from Ontario (Ancient Coast Gamay), four from the Beaujolais region (the best of which is Dubœuf Beaujolais-Villages from Vintages stores ($15.95)), one from the Languedoc and two from Italy. My preferences, in order, are:

Jeanjean Syrah Primeur 2005 (Vin de Pays d'Oc)
$9.45 (General list)
Dense purple colour; blackberry jam nose with a floral note; fruity and velvety on the palate with a touch of sweetness. Easy drinking. ****
Food match: roasted chestnuts; grilled quail

MezzaCorona Novio Vino Novello 2005 (Trentino, Italy)
$9.55 (General list)
Deeply coloured ruby; a nose of crushed black cherries and raspberries; medium-bodied, a sweetish berry flavour with good acidity and round mouth feel. ****
Food match: veal chop; fresh parmesan

Negrar Novello del Veneto 2005 (Veneto, Italy)
$8.95 (General list)
Ruby colour; fresh and lively on the nose with sweet cherry and cherry blossom notes; quite lean on the palate with a good acidic spine; medium-bodied and quaffable, especially when chilled. ***½
Food match: pasta with tomato-based sauce; grilled tuna
