  • Montalto Nero d’Avola Cabernet Sauvignon 2003
  • Casillero del Diablo Carmenère 2004

Château St. Germain 2003 (Bordeaux)
$ 14.00 (General list LCBO #152587)
The 2003 vintage in Bordeaux produced rich, concentrated wines. This Bordeaux Supérieur is unfiltered and deeply coloured with purple hues; the nose is all cedar and plums; medium-bodied, the flavour is black cherry and currants and dark chocolate with ripe tannins. For best results, decant and let stand for two hours. Good value. ***1/2
Food match: lamb loin; cheddar cheese

Montalto Nero d’Avola Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 (Sicily)
$ 8.95 (General release LCBO #621151)
This wine is a steal at the price. Purple-ruby colour, with a peppery plum bouquet; medium-full-bodied with a dry, savoury, herby-plum flavour and a firm finish. Great value. ***1/2

Casillero del Diablo Carmenère 2004 (Chile)
$11.95 (General list LCBO # 620666)
Another mouth-filling winner from Chile. Ruby-coloured with a smoky, tarry, black cherry nose; generous on the palate with plum, black cherry, blackcurrant, and chocolate flavours and a spicy, clovey, toasty oak finish. Good value. ****
Food match: brisket; beef casserole
